Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.
Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!
We’re in the process of transferring the of leadership for KISS Linux to the community-elected Benevolent Dictator For Now. The old BDFL, Dylan Araps (@dyl) had vanished without a trace ~4 months ago, and despite our attempts to reach out to him we were unable to ascertain what could have happened. When February arrived and the old website’s domain expired, the community decided it was time to move on, and we began the process of getting control of KISS’s infra (GitHub, freenode org, website, etc). All that’s left right now(?) is buying the old domain back when it goes up for auction in March.
Reminds me of Void Linux and the situation with Juan RP.
Damn, remember him from r/unixporn, hope he’s good.
Hopefully actually writing this time instead of spending all weekend in VRChat lol
Preparing the presentation for my bachelor thesis. I’m getting closer to finishing my studies. 😊
If it warms up a bit, going outside for as long as possible.
Failing that I am planning to take a dive into Godot as I’ve realized “raw” rendering really isn’t up my alley at all.
Among other things, I plan to catch up with friends that I haven’t talked to (virtually) in a while!
Also, I think I’ll continue to walk uphill both ways while wrestling to keep a TextMate Language Grammar and ANTLR in sync, to some degree.
Iterating on the QEMU fw_cfg and ramfb on non-x86 U-Boot patch series. I’m really pleased to report it works — it feels real good to have succeeded at adding something small but significant to something quite complicated.
I also realised through the week that QEMU’s riscv virt machine doesn’t support fw_cfg or ramfb, and decided that I wanted that, so there’s a patch series on the QEMU side now too! Felt good to be able to test that it worked using the U-Boot feature I added.
Trying to implement a diposable/temporary email features for my SaaS.
Have an PoC here: https://hanami.run/magic
Basically it generates random disposable/temporary email so you can use for one-off service. Paid user will be able to reverse their own address and also have sub domain dedicated to them.
Old Desktop went bust (after serving faithfully for close to 7 years). Got the tower replaced, setting things up now.
Reading Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Liking it so far, but one of the POV is very annoying.
Rereading How to Suppress Women’s Writing and having an uncomfortable conversation.
Putting together a comparison chart for gaming laptops:
Feedback about missing laptops or laptops which should not be in the list is very welcome.
I’m installing and playing around with OS 10.6 Snow Leopard on my old Mac Mini. It was the last version of OS X that I used, and it’s been a lot of fun reliving that golden era. But it’s not as usable as it once was, especially when it comes to web browsers. It’s really quite fascinating that OS 10.6 and Windows 7 were released in the same year, but Windows 7 still has the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome.
I read https://lobste.rs/s/wag0j4/what_was_last_toy_program_you_wrote and realized how little I mess around with languages. So I’m writing some pointless/meaningful but easy stuff in Janet (arg parser, find-equivalent). Hopefully I’ll do the same for other things, like making pointless conlangs and drawings
Writing a short paper on what I am planning/doing and studying a bit of information geometry (from 10.000ft up, will do the deep dive in some months).
Networking! And maybe some cycling.
Got a new VDSL modem to install, which I’ve been unable to do during the week as the kids are remotely at school, adults have had various calls in the evenings. Ahh, unofficial SLAs on home networking. I want to figure out how to access both the LTE Modem’s dashboard and the new VDSL modem’s dashboard alongside their connections, which likely means playing with pseudo-ethernet interfaces, complicated by the fact I use VLANs for a router-on-a-stick topology. All smells like oodles of fun.
Cycling; the weather has been steadily improving here in the UK over the last week. The cadence/speed sensor on my recumbent bike has decided to stop sending signals to the control panel, rendering the bike useless so I need to fix that. I’m also tempted to fix the puncture on the winter bike and actually get outside on a ride in the fresh air. Now I’ve said that it’ll likely rain though.
