For this, the display server does need to be responsive to handle the keyboard commands, however, this is actually how it is today even with VTs.

This seems false? I believe right now you can use Alt+SysRq+r to switch to the kernel’s keyboard handler, which lets you switch to a TTY via Ctrl+Alt+F[2-6].

(This is not a theoretical capability. I had to use it repeatedly due to deadlocks in Gnome Shell.)

Would changing from VT to cage/foot mean that, if the display server (in my case mutter/gnome shell) freezes, there is no ability to recover?

Thanks for fixing the link (which was a google cache pointing to reddit. Very strange and completely borked in my browser). This time, I could read the whole thing and it is very interesting.

Sorry about that, I didn’t realize it was problematic!

I was going to paste a webarchive link, but on seeing that it didn’t contain the post’s comments (too early a snapshot), I thought a google cache link might be worthwhile.

I did not realize that google cache links are prone to breaking. In hindsight though, I find it surprising that I thought they weren’t prone to breaking.

Anyway, there’s more to this story, that you can see in their older post from 2021. It seems they have also kept up work on: https://github.com/n3rdopolis/fakekmscon

For reddit links, I was using teddit or libreddit, but the great enshitfication of reddit made them impossible to use. Even the good old.reddit.com manages to send me to the new reddit inferno with each link.

Sad to have such interesting content on such a shitty platform.
