    I think it’s likely a flop priced at 649,00 USD + tax.

This Amazon Fire weighs 160g, screen is only 1280 x 720 / 4,7", yet they want 649$ for it?!

    Nexus 5 is only 349$, weighs 130g, screen is 1920x1080 / 4,95", and it’s almost a year old now.

iPhone 5s is only 112g, comes at the same price as Fire, yet at ≈1/3rd less weight, and with iOS ecosystem. Also almost a year old now, too.

Even iPhone 5c is 100$ cheaper than this Fire, and lighter (132g), and more reliable and plentiful software.

Then there’s also always http://oneplus.net/one. 299$, 1920x1080 5,5", 162g, but at least it’s 5.5" vs. 4.7" Fire, so, 162g for a bigger screen and half the cost is more tolerable, IMHO. Being powered by the open-source CyanogenMod is a big plus, too.

OnePlus One wasn’t released yet? Neither is Fire:

This item will be released on July 25, 2014.

Not sure how Amazon expects to compete with iPhone and Android at these prices with these specs.

And the Google Play market place is another attraction of the Nexus 5 (And OnePlus One?). There’s really tough competition right now.

In the seventh grade, we had elections for class president and each candidate got up and made a little speech about why they should be elected. One girl’s speech was all about why being elected class president would be great for her: how it would help her with her college applications, teach her leadership skills, etc. There was no mention of what we, the voting public, would get out of the deal. I remember thinking that she was a little unclear on the concept.

That’s what came to mind when I watched this announcement yesterday. It’s very obvious why it would be good for Amazon to sell me a phone the primary purpose of which is to make it as easy as possible to buy things from Amazon, to share all of my photos with Amazon, to watch Amazon movies, and to read Amazon books. It’s a lot less obvious what’s in it for me. Some weird face-tracking interface? Come on, has anyone ever looked at their iPhone and thought, “What this phone needs is a thing where I can tilt my head and shift the lock screen POV?” I guess the camera seems pretty nice.
