Alan Coopersmith of Oracle just pointed me to the Berkeley CSUA MOTD archive, saving for posterity a record of how the (world-writeable) MOTD file there was used as a communication medium by the students (and administration) from ’93 on. Very cool!
Edit: It was also pointed out to me that “news” lived on in Solaris 2 before being dropped for the 11 release. See http://illumos.org/man/1/news for the latest version which isn’t too far from the original.
Edit 2: Added release tag so people notice the ancient code, revived.

I should do some additional digital archeology here, and look for prior art, etc - so consider this is just my memory and opinion.
