      I was hoping for a bit of history too, as in “what compiler was used to compile this compiler and this language”, ultimately going back to the people who wrote the assembly compilers, or worse.

      Theoretically this could still be done, since the peoole responsible are still alive or at least their colleagues and friends.

        Yes, this is fascinating. For example, A History of Caml reports that “the first implementation of Caml… in 1987… compiled Caml down to LLM3, the virtual machine of the Le Lisp system”.
