My experience has been that every time I switch from one todo setup to another, it feels better. It’s the change itself and possibly the throwing away of cruft that makes things better, rather than the nature of the change. Or, perhaps, sometimes I’m changing the system to better suit the kind of work I’m doing currently and that’s a genuine improvement.
I’m convinced that paper wouldn’t be a win for me, though I’m currently using a system that is similar: Bear markdown notes with tasks in them (+ Apple’s Reminders app for recurring items). These notes have some of the freeform nature of paper, but still have some of the digital goodness (sync between devices, search)

It so reminded me of On Paper by Diomidis Spinellis!
