Ah I’ve read somewhere that Mastodon is driving the specs for ActivityPub 2… So even if you develop say a client for Lemmy you should follow Mastodon specs?
As far as I know Mastodon is not involved with any workgroup that works on ActivityPub stuff. There is a Social Web Incubator, which to the best of my knowledge is the most “official” group discussing stuff.
Getting started with ActivityPub does not have webfinger as step 1. Getting started with Mastodon does.

technically true; I participate in the w3c group, but I do so personally and not on behalf of Mastodon, for whom I also do some work.
