Hi All. This was popular in a comment thread, and it was suggested that I post it. I made this what seems like forever ago, to make pretty pictures that I could show in my motd. I have many servers for side projects, so this is very helpful visually reminding me which box I just shelled into.
One of the things I like most about this, is how its a fully static page that lets you pass around URLs with encoded images. Nothing is server side, and since the pix are so lo-res its trivial to stick them in a querystring.

Lobste.rs has an option to SSH/telnet into the application. The Lobsters logo in shell would be something cool to show as a login banner @jcs
For ANSI I prefer to use PabloDraw. Also, maybe it’s preferable to use
tputor curses for the colors too to make it compatible with more terminals. see: http://linuxcommand.org/lc3_adv_tput.php
