Just a side note… “manipulating trees in Pascal is out…” Having written production code in Pascal daily for years, trees are easy in Pascal.

Not sure what the two papers are. One is “A Nanopass Framework for Compiler Education” for sure, and the other is perhaps the tutorial “Let’s Build a Compiler, by Jack Crenshaw” which isn’t a paper.
