While not strictly technical, I found this to be a very interesting read in terms of how to handle (and not handle!) vastly different userbases in federated online communities.

    The fact that some instances have rules that another finds absolutely reprehensible, and they don’t share information with each other, but do share information with intermediate parties that don’t mind, is in my eyes a clear sign that the federation works. The whole federation doesn’t have to agree on what is good and proper, that’s the point.
