Had an interview recently where the take-home was the first step after applying. I was given a week to finish what was meant to be a 4-8 hours small project. There was an optional step in the project description to add whatever extra features you might want. All of this was unpaid, but that wasn’t even the main issue. After successfully doing the take-home and going through 2 phone calls with both the CEO and CTO they decided they can’t hire any more junior folks.
That whole process took a bit less than a month. Please don’t structure your interview like that. If you can’t hire me because I am a junior dev, don’t make me jump through so many hoops. Lesson learned.
Avoid places that use assignments for screening. It’s very lopsided, they literally contribute zero effort in the interview process but might still make you jump through the hoops even if uninterested.
